Ashton John is an award-winning filmmaker and director specialising in documentary and commercial cinema. Born in Hackney, London, he focuses on documenting the overlooked layers of the city, moving from the vibrant energy of the streets to the deeply intimate personal portraits behind closed doors.
A graduate of the prestigious National Film and Television School (NFTS), Ashton has directed independent festival and television films for over a decade, with his work featured on Channel 4 and ITV. His filmmaking philosophy is unapologetically about people, for people—crafted to provoke thought, preserve heritage, and inspire social awareness.
Blending high-end cinematic execution with rigorous social research, Ashton also serves as a Practitioner-in-Residence at UCL Anthropology and Open City Docs, where he lectures and mentors emerging filmmakers.
